Enchanting Winter Wonderland
A blast of icy breeze hits my face, instantly turning my cheeks red as I step into the frozen wonderland. Late afternoon sun streams through the jagged icicles that hang from the trees, painting a golden light onto the smooth snow and covering everything in sight. Feathery snowflakes dance in the sky and then drop softly to the ground like falling stars.
Dark skeleton-like trees, dusted with icing sugar snow entwine to create a perfect archway. Tall rusty, iron lampposts line the way as I begin my walk. On the other side, a frozen pond has transformed into an ice skating rink, the sound of sharp blades slicing through the smooth ice cuts through the air. Children’s laughter is all around as they slip and slide in their ice skates. Content parents smile and watch whilst standing wrapped up in large coats with steaming coffee in their hands to ward off the chill.
Breathtaking mountains with an opaque layer of cloud surrounding them stand proud. In the distance, I can just make out a pack of white wolves gracefully roaming around the rocky edges, peering over at the magical land below. Gusts of winds blow the shimmering snow into spiraling waves that dance gracefully through the air, I stop and think about much I love the crisp clarity of winter. When I look up I see snowy, white owls spreading their long powerful wings and soaring into the now slate grey colored sky. Standing at the base of a towering tree I watch as the owls enter their cozy home inside a hole of the thick tree trunk. They huddle up closely in their warm shelter.
As night begins to fall a dark velvety blanket is wrapped around the sky. A thin crescent moon and a sea of stars shine a pale light down to the ground. The entire land is lit up by enchanting fairy lights wrapped around branches. They twinkle in the dark, making it seem like you’re walking through a fairytale. Everything is calm and quiet. The only sound breaking the stillness is the crunch of snow beneath my feet and the cracks and pops as I reach an open fire and see my friends gathered around it. The ambient glow from the flames warm the air and the sweet smell of hot chocolate is an irresistible temptation during the cold winter night. We sit shoulder to shoulder for hours with thick blankets on our laps and cheering each other with campfire songs and stories. Although it’s cold the beauty of winter warms all of our hearts.
